Drunken youth crashes car into median at New Town

Kolkata: An SUV toppled and was flung almost 30 feet away, after hitting the road median in New Town on Monday evening. Miraculously, no one was hurt in the accident. According to locals, the driver lost control over the car as it was running at a speed of around 100 km per hour.

Police sources informed that two youths were racing in their cars. Before commencing the race they changed their cars with each other. At around 6 pm, they started from Kadampukur traffic signal and within a few seconds, after covering a distance of almost one kilometer, one of the cars hit the median divider of the road near Teen Kannya crossing and toppled. Some eyewitnesses of the accident informed police that the driver of the vehicle, identified as Arghya Das (22), was recording a video on his smartphone, while driving using one hand.

Hearing a loud noise, civic volunteers from Teen Kannya traffic signal rushed to the spot and tried to recover Das. They also informed the New Town police station about the accident.

Upon receiving the news, police personnel went to the spot and recovered Das. Miraculously, Das did not have a scratch on his body. He was taken to the police station.

There he was examined using a breath analyser, after which it became clear that Das was driving in drunken condition. Later, he was detained and prosecuted according to the law. The car has been seized by the police.
