Driver held for stealing money from passenger

Kolkata: A cab driver was arrested by New Town police station on Saturday for allegedly stealing money from a female passenger's purse.

The passenger identified as Aishwarya Roy filed a complaint with New Town police station. According to the police, on Saturday afternoon Roy hired a cab from a housing complex near Akanksha crossing. Her destination was somewhere in Salt Lake. In the middle of the journey, she stopped the cab and got down with Rs 1500, from the bundle of the notes she had, to buy some medicine, leaving the purse inside the cab. After returning with the medicine, when Roy was about to put the change inside her purse, she noticed the money inside the bag was missing. When she asked the driver, he denied the allegation.

Being almost sure that the driver has committed theft, she took the cab to the police station and filed a complaint. Later during investigation, the stolen money was found concealed in a secret space inside the cab.

Immediately Das was detained and later arrested on charge of theft. The cab was also seized. He is remanded to judicial custody after being produced before the Barasat Court on Sunday.
