Dredging underway in Muriganga ahead of Gangasagar Mela

Kolkata: The state Irrigation department is carrying out a massive dredging work in Muriganga ahead of Gangasagar Mela on Sagar Island to ensure round the clock operation of vessels to ferry pilgrims from mainland to island and vice versa.
Lakhs of people from different parts of the country visit Sagar Island to take a holy dip at the confluence of river Ganga during Makarsankranti every year. The state government makes an elaborate arrangement to ensure that the pilgrims do not face any inconvenience while they are headed towards Sagar Island and their safe return.
It may be mentioned that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a high-level meeting at Nabanna to discuss different issues related to the Gangasagar Mela and she had directed all the concerned departments to take necessary steps for security and safety of the pilgrims.
Besides all arrangements, the state Irrigation department is carrying out the dredging work at different points in Muriganga River. During low tide, it becomes impossible to operate vessels to ferry pilgrims from mainland to the island and dredging was essential to ensure that vessels can operate even during the low tide. So, the state Irrigation department was given the charge to execute the work of dredging.
Rajib Banerjee, the state Irrigation minister, senior officials of the department and other concerned officials visited the spot where the dredging work is being carried out. A target has been set to complete the entire task of dredging before January 10 from when pilgrims start visiting the island.
Banerjee said he has reviewed the progress of the work at all the points. Necessary directions have been given to the officials posted at those points to supervise the work. Moreover, the entire task will be completed before the set target if the work goes on in the current manner.
It may be mentioned that steps have been taken to increase two dredgers to complete the task ahead of the set deadline.
The state Irrigation department has taken up all the necessary moves in ensuring a proper dredging work so that vessels could properly ferry pilgrims.
Dredging work is carried out every year ahead of the Gangasagar Mela on Sagar Island. But this time certain steps have been taken so that a permanent solution to it can be found out.
