Don't live under any illusion, we will come back to power in 2021: Mamata tells BJP

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said her party would definitely come back to power in the next Assembly elections in 2021 and the BJP leadership should not live under any illusion of gaining control over the state anytime soon.

"If somebody is thinking and saying that our government will be dethroned from power in 2021, they would lose the right to speak for their misdeeds. They will face the ire of voters and would themselves be wiped out. Trinamool Congress will be again voted to power and I will come back and address you again here in 2021," Banerjee said at a meeting with the Vice-Chancellors, college and university teachers of the higher education institutes in the state at Netaji Indoor Stadium.

Elaborating on the 'misdeeds' she referred to the saffron party's attempts to create divisions among people along religious lines, trying to engineer riots, change the course of history and push the banking system into the doldrums. "We will fight till the end against the anti-people policies of the Central government and their acts would not go unpunished by the masses," she added.

Several leaders of the saffron party have been asserting that they would end TMC's rule in the next Assembly elections after it had won 18 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in Bengal in the last Lok Sabha polls.

"A private bank (HDFC) has imposed restrictions and people cannot draw more than one lakh from banks in Maharashtra. Several banks have been merged and the employees are suffering from a sense of insecurity. This is a great crisis as people are in a fear of security of their money," she maintained.

She also referred to the recent snoop scandal and said that her party will oppose any move to compromise the privacy of people. It was on Saturday when Banerjee had claimed that even her phone was tapped and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take serious note of such incidents of the alleged surveillance.

Her remarks assume significance with the BJP failing to get a majority on its own in the recently concluded Assembly polls in Haryana and Maharashtra and the Opposition parties performing well.

It may be mentioned that this is for the first time since the launch of 'Didi Ke Bolo' campaign on July 29, a brainchild of poll strategist Prashant Kishor, that Banerjee has made a statement on the 2021 Assembly polls in the state.
