Death sentence to 3 for murdering three members of the same family

Darjeeling: A Siliguri Court on Saturday awarded death sentence to three persons for murdering three members of a family.

The Session's 1st Court sentenced Sahadeep Barman, Dip Sutradhar and Chiranjeeb Modak to death for murdering Pradeep Bardhan (62), his wife Dipti (52) and son Prasanjit (22). The incident had occurred on September 14, 2015, when the trio had entered the house of the victim, located at Leninnagar under Matigarah police station, Siliguri.

After entering the house they strangled the victims with ropes and battered them with beams, thereby eventually killing them. They then escaped with the valuables in the house.

"The three had worked as carpenters a few months prior to the date of the incident. At that time, they had planned the robbery. Reshmi Sen, the married daughter of the deceased, filed an FIR on September 15. Based on that, the police started investigations," stated Pijush Ghosh, Assistant Public Prosecutor. As Bardhan's cell phone was missing, the police started tracking it. This led to the trio one by one. While Barman and Sutradhar were arrested from their homes in Matigarah, Modak was arrested from Malbazar on September 17. "They were charged with murder under Sections 302 of the Indian Penal Code. Judge Deboprasad Nath dubbed it a rarest of rare case and awarded death sentence," added the APP.

Chandan Sen, the defence lawyer, said they would challenge the order in High Court.
