CU to confer D Litt on Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee

Kolkata: Calcutta University will confer D Litt on noble laureate Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee in its convocation scheduled in January.

We have decided to award D Litt to Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee at our annual convocation scheduled on January 28, 2020. The university syndicate has unanimously taken this decision today, said Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee, Vice-Chancellor of CU.

It is learnt that Calcutta University Vice-Chancellor had spoken with Banerjee when he visited his residence in South Kolkata on October 22 soon after he bagged the Nobel prize.

The desire of the university to confer the honour upon Banerjee was also discussed during the telephonic conversation.

The CU Vice-Chancellor and Banerjee have been batch mates at Presidency College.

Banerjee did his Bachelor's degree from Presidency College, Calcutta (now known as Presidency University, Kolkata) in 1981. He then went to pursue a Master's degree in economics at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi in 1983.
