CU to bring all hostels under CCTV surveillance

Kolkata: In a significant stride towards boosting security, Calcutta University has decided to bring all its 14 hostels in the city under CCTV surveillance. According to sources in the varsity, the move comes in the wake of incidents of ragging and clashes at a number of its hostels in the last few months.
"Our focus is to ensure the safety and security of the boarders in our hostel. It is needless to say that there are always limitations of manual security. The CCTVs, with the most modern form of technology, will help us to keep a hawk eye on the hostels," registrar of Calcutta University Rajagopal Dhar Chakraborti said.
It may be mentioned that the responsibility of installation of the CCTVs has been handed over to Webel. The monitoring of the cameras will be maintained in such a way so that nobody can tamper with the footage.
The entrance of the hostel, the front and back side, the canteen and some other strategic locations have been earmarked for this purpose.
It may be mentioned that there are a number of foreign students, who are lodged in CU hostels across the city. It has been barely a month since when some outsiders had barged into the CU hostel located at Bowbazar and had ransacked and damaged property, assaulting some boarders who tried to stop them.
In a recent incident of alleged ragging at a Bidhan Sarani hostel, the University Grants Commission had expressed its dissatisfaction over the role of CU in conducting probe into alleged ragging by a first year law student. Due to lack of evidence, the authorities are still groping in the dark regarding the enquiry.
It may be mentioned that discussions regarding installation of CCTV have been going on for the last few months.
