Cricket betting racket busted, two held

Kolkata: The Detective Department (DD) of Kolkata Police has busted a cricket betting racket and arrested two persons in this connection from a house on Rabindra Sarani under the jurisdiction of Jorasanko police station.

According to sources, the Detective Department was asked to gather information on possible gambling or betting activities during the cricket world cup.

On Saturday evening, police officers were tipped-off that a cricket betting racket was operating somewhere in Chitpur area.

activities were being carried out.

Around 6:25 pm, officers of the Detective Department raided the house on Rabindra Sarani and found two persons were betting on a cricket match inside a room on the ground floor of the house.

Both of them were detained and the room was frisked. During the search, cops found more than Rs 1 lakh from their possession. Also, two mobile phones and a television were seized which the accused persons were using for betting. The accused persons were identified as Rajkumar Lihala from Lake Town and Amit Lumar Gupta alias Golu who lived in the house.

Cops suspect that more persons are involved in the racket. Both of them were booked under sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy) of the IPC along with sections of the West Bengal Gambling and Prize Competition Act. Search is on to nab others connected to the racket.
