Craft fair at Gitabitan Township

Kolkata: The Housing Infrastructure development Corporation (Hidco) will organise a craft fair at the Gitabitan Township in December.

The township has a special arena where the artisans will stay and set up stalls to sell their products.

This concept is unique and nowhere in the country a township has a zone earmarked for the artisans.

The craft fair in 2019 is important as a controversy has started over holding the Poush Mela by the Visva Bharati authorities after the Vice-Chancellor Professor Bidyut Chakraborty has expressed displeasure over holding the mela.

The mela at Gitabitan is likely to be held after the end of Poush Mela. The artisans from Birbhum and its neighbouring districts like east and West Midnapore, Bankura, Purulia and Jhargram bring their produce which are sold during the fair.

The central plaza of the proposed township has an architectural splendor. The making of the murals that will be put be put up are in the final stage. The landscape of the township has been built keeping in mind the rich heritage of Santiniketan.

The Hidco has set up three model flats and the utilization of space in the flats is remarkable.

In front of the big plots, the residents will be requested to set up a small garden.

The environment of Birbhum is different from other parts of Bengal. Rabindranath Tagore loved the weather and preferred to stay

during summer as he was attracted by the silence and serenity of the place.

Gitabitan Township proposes to offers that silence so that people from the city can come and spend time in the middle of silence and enjoy the weather of the area.
