Cracks appear on Ultadanga flyover, traffic movement shut down

Kolkata: Traffic movement on Ultadanga flyover has been closed after an inspection team from Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) noticed multiple cracks on the pier cap of its Eastern Metropolitan (EM) Bypass bound flank.

According to state Urban Development minister Firhad Hakim, primarily both the flanks of the flyover will be closed for traffic movement for the next 2-3 days.

According to Hakim, an expert committee was set up to inspect the health of the bridges and flyovers across the city on a regular basis. On Tuesday, while doing so, the night team noticed multiple cracks on the pier cap of the EM Bypass bound flank of the flyover, which had collapsed on March 3, 2013 and was later repaired and brought back to shape.

Immediately after the detection, KMDA authorities requested Bidhannagar and Kolkata Police to stop vehicular movement on the flyover.

Hakim later said: "Our expert teams had been engaged to do a visual study and then a study in detail. While doing so, cracks were seen. Primarily both the flanks have been closed to traffic. There's nothing to panic about it. Our experts will study the problem and will set up props to provide support and following that, vehicular movement will be allowed."

Earlier the on March 3, 2013, the same flank on which the cracks have developed, had collapsed while a truck loaded with marble was moving towards EM Bypass. Later, it was found that there was a problem with placement of the girders which was later rectified and the collapsed portion was constructed again.
