Crack in rail halts train services in Sealdah-Ranaghat section Kolkata: Train service was disrupted in the Sealdah-Ranaghat section on Sunday morning as a crack was spotted in the track near Kanchrapara railway station. Local people spotted the crack in the railway track in the Sealdah-Ranaghat section on Sunday morning. The matter was immediately informed to the station master at Kanchrapara. The local trains which were supposed to ply through the track were stopped. The incident had triggered tension among the passengers who were travelling in the local trains in this section. Some of the stranded passengers were curious to know why the train service came to a halt. After coming to know about the incident, many of the stranded passengers took buses to reach their destinations. Sunday being a holiday, the number of passengers was less compared to other days. Some of the local residents had found that a railway track on the Up line had developed a crack, measuring around 3 inches. After being informed, senior railway officials rushed to the spot and started the repair work on a war footing. They also examined the track to ascertain the cause of the crack. The train services remained stagnated for nearly two hours as the repair work was going on. Passengers travelling in the local trains in that section were seriously inconvenienced. The crack was repaired in the afternoon following which train services were resumed. According to the preliminary investigation, railway officials suspect that the crack might have developed in the track due to the rain and fluctuating weather. Cracks developing in railway tracks is nothing new. It often takes place due to the fluctuating temperature during winter. The situation came to normal in the afternoon as the repair work had been completed. A probe has been initiated in this regard.mpost
