CPI(M) activists clash with police in three districts

Kolkata: Tension ran high among the people outside the district magistrate's office in three districts — North 24 Parganas, East Midnapore and Bankura — following a clash that broke out between the CPI(M) activists and the police after the latter restricted their entry to the DM offices.
The CPI(M) organised a rally at the end of which they had intended to submit a memorandum to the district magistrate to protest against the 'anti-people' steps by both the Centre and the state government. In all the three districts, some police personnels and CPI(M) activists received injuries.
Chaos broke out outside the North 24 Parganas' DM office at Barasat when the CPI(M) supporters wanted to break the police barricade. The party supporters wanted to forcefully enter the DM office but the police did not allow them to enter the office premises.
The CPI(M) supporters attacked the police and pelted stones at them. As the situation was going beyond control, the cops had to resort to lathi-charge to disperse the mob. Police also burst tear gas shells. It has been alleged that some of the CPI(M) activists hurled bombs at the police. Some of the activists also hurled bombs inside the Barasat District Court situated at a stone's throw distance from the DM office. The activists later put up a rail blockade at Barasat Station causing inconveniences to the passengers. When the police urged them to lift the rail block, they attacked the cops. Railway Protection Force (RPF) jawans later lathi-charged and dispersed the mob and the block was lifted. CPI(M) supporters also ransacked police vehicles outside the DM office at Tamluk. The similar clash broke out at Tamluk and Bankura.
