Cops to bring in swiping machines, digital facilities for easier settlement of traffic fines

Kolkata: Kolkata Police will soon introduce swipe machines or other digital payment facilities of spot fine for traffic rule violations. The move will facilitate persons who are often unable to cough up the fine amount due to paucity of cash and has to pay it at a later date.

Currently, traffic fines can be paid online, using cards, offline at designated bank branches and in some cases through payment service providers or by cash at different traffic guards or at Lalbazar, the headquarters of Kolkata Police.

"To start with, we will provide card swiping machines to our personnel on duty near the traffic guards and will gradually roll it out to all sergeants who are mobile in the city. This will enable a person to pay fines right at the spot, even if he/she is short of cash," said Santosh Pandey, Deputy Commissioner, Traffic, Kolkata Police.

Once a card is swiped the machine will print two receipts that will carry challan number, list of traffic violations, vehicle details, fine amount and a transaction ID.

An SMS will be sent on the mobile phone of the payee immediately and this will act as an additional e-evidence that the fine has been settled.

"Nowadays, there is hardly any car owner who does not have debit or credit card or digital payment facilities. So we are hopeful that it will be of immense help and would relieve them from coming to traffic guard or Lalbazar to pay spot fines at a later date," a senior official of the Traffic department said.

The official said that as per the department the move will also reduce hassle of collection and counting of cash and then going to deposit the same at designated bank branches.

"Soon there will be cash swiping machine facilities at Lalbazar too, so that we have to handle minimum cash," he added.
