Cops seize 24 firearms, 50 cartridges from Domkal

Ahead of the Domkal municipal elections scheduled on May 14, Murshidabad police on Wednesday seized a huge cache of arms and ammunitions from three places in Domkal and the district and arrested four persons for their alleged involvement in smuggling arms.

A senior police officer in the district said that altogether 24 firearms and 50 rounds of cartridges were recovered during raids that were carried out by the district police at different areas on Tuesday night. Police have started a detailed probe in this connection.

Acting on a tip-off, the senior police officers of the district raided some places in Khargram, Kandi, Lalbagh areas of Murshidabad and seized 24 firearms including rifles and revolver and 50 rounds of cartridges. According to a senior police officer, they came to know about the incident after interrogating a person who was arrested from Sagardighi area on Tuesday, a senior police officer in the district said.

After interrogating the arrested man, police came to know about the assembling of the arms in these places and raided the areas. Four more persons were arrested from whom the arms were recovered. On Tuesday, police intercepted a car and arrested the accused at Sagardighi. The arrested person told the police in detail how they operate a smuggling racket and who were the members involved in the crime.

Police came to know in the interrogation that the accused used to smuggle arms from Bihar. Police are investigating where these arms were being sold and if the accused were a part of any international arms smuggling racket. Police also suspect that there are some other persons involved in the racket and the investigating officers are trying to know the names.
