Cops register suo motu case against Sayantan Basu

Kolkata: North 24-Parganas police on Wednesday started a suo motu case against Sayantan Basu for the derogatory statements he had made during an election rally in Basirhat's Bhabla on Tuesday.

Basu is contesting the elections on BJP's ticket from Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency.

The district Trinamool Congress leaders have also lodged a complaint with the returning officer at Basirhat in this regard.

A senior leader from the district said that no political leaders can make such remarks which are highly derogatory and may also intimidate the voters.

During his election rally on Tuesday, Basu said that he would ask the Central force personnel to fire bullets not aiming at the feet but the

chest of those who will create trouble. His statements invited criticism from various quarters. The district police have booked Basu under seven different sections of the IPC.

BJP leader Basu has however claimed that their party workers were not allowed to paint wall graffiti by the Trinamool Congress activists in Basirhat.

He also alleged that police are slapping various charges on their party workers and hence he had lost his temper. Basu also stated many other cases were already pending against him in various police stations and the new case is just an add-on to the old ones.

He also stated that he would inform the matter to the Election commission.

They might stage sit-in demonstration in front of the office of the Chief Electoral Officer in the state protesting against the false cases that have been slapped the BJP party workers in various parts of the state, Basu maintained.

Trinamool Congress candidate from Basirhat, Nusrat Jahan in her Twitter handle urged the people not to get intimidated by the threatening statements made by her political opponent. She also reminded that our democracy propagates peace and not violence.

It was learnt that the Election Commission will examine the video footages of Basu. The commission may also seek clarification from Basu in this regard.

Meanwhile, the CEO office has already sought a report on various controversial statements of other BJP leaders including Mukul Roy, BJP's candidate from Jadavpur Anupam Hazra.
