Cop jumps in front of Metro rake

Kolkata: Metro services were disrupted on Thursday morning, after a person committed suicide by jumping in front of a Kavi Subhas bound rake. The person, who was later identified as Amiya Kumar Mondal (55), was an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Kolkata Police posted at the Equipment Cell in Special Branch (SB).

According to Metro authorities, on Thursday morning at around 9:30 am, Mondal was waiting at Shyambazar station along with other passengers. At 9:33 am, when a Kavi Subhas bound train had just entered the platform partially, Mondal jumped in front of the rake.

Seeing him jump, the motorman tried to stop the rake by applying emergency brake but failed to stop it on time. The rake came to a halt after running over Mondal.

Metro services were suspended immediately. The rake was reportedly driven backwards to rescue Mondal, who was found alive. However, he succumbed to his injuries while being taken to R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. Doctors at the hospital declared him brought dead.

During the period of obstruction, truncated services were on between Central and Kavi Subhash Metro stations, commencing from 9:47 am. Normal Metro services resumed from 10:09 am, after a thorough check of the track and rake.

As the incident happened during peak hours, a huge number of office-goers and students faced immense harassment. Several people reached their destinations late due to the incident. It may be recalled that two days ago on Tuesday, Metro services were suspended for an hour after an elderly person identified as Baldev Singh (64), committed suicide in the same manner. At around 5:29 pm, when a Kavi Subhas bound rake was about to enter the platform, Singh jumped in front of the rake.
