Cop 'inaction' to be probed, 3 accused remanded in police custody till July 3

Kolkata: An investigating team has been formed, headed by the DC traffic, to probe if there was any dereliction of duty by the on-duty traffic cop whom the woman boxer, a victim of alleged molestation, accused of being a mute spectator.

The investigating team will carry out a probe to ascertain if there was any negligence on the part of the on-duty cop deployed at the spot at the time of the incident. If any such negligence is found to be true, stern steps would be taken. The DC Traffic will submit a report after conducting a probe.

Meanwhile, three persons who were arrested in connection with the molestation of a woman boxer have been remanded in police custody till July 3. The Kolkata Police have started a detailed probe into the incident.

Suman Kumari, an internationally acclaimed boxer, uploaded a Facebook post on Friday narrating how she was molested by some youths in front of a police personnel at the crossing of Remount Road and Diamond Harbour Road crossing. She also mentioned how the cop present at the spot was a mute spectator. Three persons have been arrested within a short span of time. An inquiry was also started on the basis of the post. A case at South Port police station has also begun. Police also went through the CCTV footages and arrested the accused. On its Facebook page, the Kolkata Police drew the attention of the victim and said they would ensure that the accused are punished. The three accused, identified as Rahul Sharma, Seikh Firoz and Wasim Khan, admitted their involvement in the incident, the post uploaded by the city police mentioned. It may be mentioned that the Commissioner of Police had instructed the policemen to maintain a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) after former Miss India Ushashi Sengupta was heckled by some youths in the heart of the city. Sengupta had also alleged police negligence.

On her Friday's Facebook post, she alleged that she was going to work on her scooter. She was on the vehicle when the three accused tried to board a bus. They were allegedly obstructed to board the bus due to the scooter and that's why they allegedly started abusing her. She reportedly chased down the bus at the crossing of Diamond Harbour Road and Remount Road. When she protested, they got down from the bus and assaulted her. She also alleged that she sought help from the policeman who told her to go to the police station and file a complaint.
