Constable kills wife, daughter over refusal to accept illicit relationship

Kolkata: A police constable has been accused of killing his wife and his eight-year-old daughter after his wife protested against his extra-marital affair.
The incident took place in Hooghly's Chinsurah on Saturday morning. The local residents found the bodies of the victims lying on the bed at their residence at Rabindranagar area.
The accused has been absconding since the incident took place. The local residents alleged that a quarrel broke out between the couple a few months ago after the woman came to know about the illicit love affair of her husband. The accused Prabhat Roy, a constable with the state police, had married his wife Kanika Roy (34) around 14 years ago.
They had two daughters — the elder daughter aged around 11 while the younger daughter was eight-year-old. The accused used to live with his wife and two daughters at his house at Rabindranagar.
But in the past few months, the accused had been staying with the woman with whom he had been involved in an illicit affair. The accused sometimes used to visit his house at Rabindranagar during night and used to leave the house the next morning. The locals told the police that the accused did not send money to his family as a result, his wife had to lend money from others to run the family.
A few months ago, the accused father took his elder daughter to one of his relatives' house. It was learnt that the accused came to his house on Friday night when a heated altercation broke out between the couple.
The quarrel soon turned ugly and a scuffle broke out between the couple. Some of the local residents heard them shouting at each other but they did not intervene considering this to be an everyday phenomenon.
On Saturday morning, they found the bodies of the woman and her daughter lying on the bed and informed the matter to the police who sent the bodies for post-mortem examination. It was learnt that there were some injury marks on their bodies.
Police are yet to confirm how the victims were killed. The local residents staged a demonstration in front of police and demanded the arrest of the accused. Police have started a raid to nab the culprit who is still at large. A detailed probe has been initiated.
