Competition to boost creativity in artisans

Kolkata: Artisans from various districts of West Bengal showcased products at the State Level Handicrafts Competition 2019-20 organised in the city on Wednesday.

"Directorate of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Government of West Bengal has been organising district level handicrafts competition in the districts (District Industries Centres/ Sub- District Industries Centres) and State Level handicrafts competition at Kolkata every year in

order to encourage the craft persons of West Bengal for creation of new and innovative products," said Anil Singh, an official.

Wares of artisans, shortlisted from the district level handicrafts competition, were on display at the exhibition held at the office of general manager, District Industries Centre at Bentinck Street.

"If anyone wishes to buy the products from the exhibition then he/she will have to contact us. After that we will contact the artisan at the district and then payment will be made," Singh said.

Handicrafts selected in the district level were given cash awards.

The first prize amounted to Rs 1,500, second prize was Rs 1,000 and the special prize of Rs 500 was given along with a certificate.

"This is a wonderful initiative taken by the Bengal government. This is a golden opportunity for artisans. The exhibits are fantastic," said Bhaswati Pahar, Industrial Development Officer.

It might be mentioned that the Department of Micro

Small and Medium Enterprises and Textiles, Government of West Bengal, has been patronising the wonderful craft heritage of Bengal, not only to sustain it but to further develop it, keeping pace with new demand pattern and new designs.
