Cold wave undeterred even as mercury climbs a notch

Kolkata: Temperature in the city marginally increased on Tuesday from the previous day, while the cold wave is set to sweep through all the districts in the next few days, the regional meteorological centre at Alipore said.
The city today recorded a temperature of 11 degree Celsius, three degrees below normal. Monday's temperature in the city stood at 10.5 degree Celsius. The mercury has, however, dropped below 10 degree in various districts with people getting a winter shiver.
According to the weather office prediction, the chilly spell will continue to sweep through the city and several parts of South Bengal districts.
The regional met office has issued an alert, saying that the cold wave will sweep through all the districts in South Bengal in the next few days.
According to an official of the Alipore weather office, the city's temperature is expected to hover around 11 degree Celsius for the next two days but the distr- icts may witness a further dip in the mercury.
The cold spell is here to stay in the state for the next couple of days.
There will be no respite from the chilly spell in South Bengal as of now, an official of the Met office said.
Sriniketan on Tuesday recorded 6.2 degree Celsius, five degrees below normal, whereas Burdwan registered 8.8, Bankura 8.4, Purulia 6.8, Malda 8.1, Berhampore 7.6, Krishnanagar 6.2 and Digha 9.3. Mercury has plunged to 5.9 degree Celsius in Jalpaiguri on Tuesday.
The situation is not likely to improve in the next two days as the north-westerly wind will continue to sweep through the state, giving a cold shiver to the people.
An official of the Alipore weather office said that there will be dense fog in some of the South Bengal districts in the morning. Normal life has been affected in the North Bengal districts as well, due to dense fog in the morning.
Many trains were delayed while some have been cancelled causing serious inconvenience to the passengers. People were stranded in different railways stations.
