Cognizant wins inaugural CRPL trophy

Kolkata: Bengal Water Sports, which aims to promote the sport of rowing among all strata of society, hosted the first Indoor Corporate Rowing Premier League (CRPL) at the Calcutta Rowing Club (CRC) in Kolkata.
This is the first such event in the whole of Asia. Cognizant lifted the champions trophy with a total of 121 points, followed by IBM who were the 1st Runner-up with 113 while the 2nd Runner-up were India Power with 104 points.
400 participants from close to 50 corporate bodies participated in the Corporate Rowing League which took place on December 16 and 17.
Also speaking on the occasion, Shakil Ahmed, director, Bengal Water Sports, said: "Our endeavour is to promote the sport of rowing among all sections of society given it is a fun-filled and injury-free way to maintain and improve one's fitness. The outdoor sport is also an Olympic sport and this city has a great culture of rowing, which if tapped and promoted properly can yield rich dividends. Indoor rowing is also fast gaining popularity with the sport now featuring at the Asian and World championship levels and our effort will be to get it inducted into the Olympics as well."
The event was graced by the presence of Debobrata Samaddar, Senior General Manager, TATA Steel, Somesh Dasgupta, President, India Power and RK Dasgupta, President, Rowing Club.
BWS was formed by Shakil Ahmed, an avid rower who started rowing in 1993 and has under his belt 26 international medals besides numerous state and national ones. He currently holds the Limca record in indoor rowing for achieving 50,000 meters (50 km) in a time of 4 hours 36 minutes. Since the last four years, he is leading the Half Marathon (21,097 meters) Indoor Rowing.
