CM to launch movement over EVM manipulation

Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress will go all out against manipulation of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM), said party supremo Mamata Banerjee while presiding over the core committee meeting at her Kalighat residence on Friday.

Alleging EVM tampering, she said: "This is not the real result and we will launch movement to create awareness among the people."

It may be mentioned that in the first meeting of the party to analyse the post-poll scenario on May 25, Banerjee had said that "nobody had questioned when Rajiv Gandhi had won 414 seats in the Lok Sabha but everyone is questioning the figure that the BJP has got in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls." It may be mentioned that it was Banerjee who had first pointed out that EVMs can be manipulated way back in early 2000.

The date from which she would start the movement has not been decided yet. Earlier, nobody took the matter seriously and many made fun of her. However, over the years, hundreds of articles have been published on EVM tampering in various science journals. It may be mentioned that Saurabh Bharadwaj, AAP MLA, had demonstrated how EVMs can be hacked in the Delhi Assembly. Even in the West, many countries have discarded EVMs and returned to paper ballots.

It may be mentioned that the Opposition leaders had gone to the Election Commission of India and demanded that all VVPAT machines be checked as well.

Banerjee told TMC leaders and workers that increasing the strength of the party is the need of the hour and assured them not to get perturbed in view of the emerging post-poll scenario.

She instructed the party leaders to open the party offices that have been forcibly shut down by the BJP in different areas in the state.
