CM condoles death of Annapurna Devi

Kolkata: Annapurna Devi, renowned Sitar and Surbahar player and daughter of Ustad Allauddin Khan, died at Mumbai early on Saturday morning. She was 91-years-old.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted: "Saddened at the passing away of Annapurna Devi. My condolences to her family and admirers."

Born in 1927 as Roshanara Khanshe, she was named Annapurna by Maharaja Brijnath Singh of the former Maihar Estate. She was married to Pandit Ravi Shankar in 1941 and they got divorced in 1961. Annapurna married Rooshikumar Pandya in 1982 when she was 55-years-old and he was 42. Pandya died of a massive cardiac arrest in 2013 at the age of 73.

Annapurna Devi had performed with Pandit Ravi Shankar in Kolkata. She stopped public performance and began to give training to her students that included Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, Pandit Nityanand Haldipur, Pandit Basant

Kabra and Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia.
