Classmates turn tormentors: Girl falls ill after constant ragging

Kolkata: A Class X student of a private school in Baguiati was allegedly ragged by some of her classmates which resulted in the victim falling ill. She is also under tremendous mental trauma.

The family members of the victim lodged a complaint at the local police station alleging that the school authorities did not take any steps in this regard despite repeated pleas. The incident triggered tension in the school campus when the victim came out of the school utterly devastated.

She was under trauma and alleged there was a conspiracy against her. She also complained that she was feeling pain on her chest. On the basis of specific complaint, police have started a probe into the incident.

The family members of the victim alleged that they came to know about the incident on September 11. They also said that they found the girl was depressed for the last few days.

After being asked she broke down and told her family members that she had been subjected to torture by some of her classmates.

After knowing the incident, the family members went to the school and talked to the school authorities.

They claimed that the school authorities advised them to settle the matter. Despite the matter being reported to the school authorities, they did not take any step in this regard.

When the victim went to the school on Friday, she had was subjected to similar incident. She was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital for treatment.

The family members alleged that the school authorities were trying to suppress the incident. They also claimed that the girl became unconscious after she was taken out of the school building.

The victim's relatives said that the school authorities must take action against those who were involved in the incident.

They said that the school authorities must go through the CCTV footages. They alleged that the torture on the girl had been going on for the past two weeks.

The school authorities were not, however, available for comment.

The Bidhannagar Police started a probe into the incident. It may be mentioned here that there is no specific law against ragging in schools.

The family members have demanded that a case must be started against the accused and the school administration under POCSO Act.

In 2015, one first-year engineering student of Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Management (CIPET), Haldia was allegedly thrashed by his seniors for complaining the institute's authority on ragging in East Midnapore district.
