Class VI student dies while on unofficial educational tour

Kolkata: The body of a Class VI student of a Dum Dum school was recovered from a pond in Malekan Ghumti area under Hingalganj police station on Saturday. The deceased, Rajarshi Das along with four of his classmates and four teachers of the school had gone on an educational tour to the Sunderbans. Rajarshi is a resident of Manikpur in Durganagar in North 24 Parganas.
According to police sources, Rajarshi along with four friends and four teachers had left for the Sunderbans on Friday and was scheduled to stay at the residence of one of the school's teachers Krishna Pada Mondal. They had gone there to make a documentary on the Sunderbans.
On Saturday afternoon, Rajarshi and his four friends went to take a bath in a pond adjacent to Mondal's house. After taking a bath, while they were returning, Rajarshi insisted that he would go back to have a dip in the pond for the second time. Two of his friends accompanied him.
The two friends who were with him had told police that while walking beside the pond, Rajarshi suddenly tripped and fell down into it and went missing. The two immediately informed the other members of the team including the teachers about the mishap.
The body was fished out after a two-hour search. The student of Kishore Bharati school was rushed to a local hospital where he was declared brought dead. The family members of the deceased were informed in the evening following which Rajarshi's father Mrityunjoy Das rushed to the spot.
"There was total negligence on the part of the teachers. They had taken the initiative to take the students and the school was not at all involved in the educational tour. The teachers who were accompanying him did not inform us anything. It was one of his classmates who called me up and that too after he died," Das said. The police have started a thorough investigation into the incident and are questioning the victim's friends and teachers who had gone on the tour along with him for further leads.
