City wakes up to coolest day of season, welcomes winter

Kolkata: The city-dwellers finally woke up to a chilly winter morning on Wednesday making it the coolest day of the season so far.
This has prompted the people to bring out their woolen clothes too. The minimum temperature in the city was recorded as 16.6 degrees Celsius which is one degree below the normal.
The regional meteorological department at Alipore said that the mercury will further go down in next few days. A senior official of the MeT department said that the temperature drastically
fell by a few notches making the city-dwellers feel the advent of winter. The temperature during night will go down, said the weather office. Wednesday's temperature went down by five degrees as compared to what it was on Tuesday. The temperature of the day may also drop by a few notches from Thursday, predicts the weather office.
According to a weather expert, the north-westerly winds pulled the mercury down to 16.6 degrees Celsius. The winter has set in after the low pressure trough formed over Bay of Bengal had moved towards the other direction. Even the moisture which was in the air also evaporated paving the way for winter. The people from the state may feel cold as the Northern wind will continue to sweep
through the state.
The process of the mercury going down may be further interrupted for 2-3 days after November 25 due to
Western disturbances. The winter will finally set in its full swing from the first week of December.
The north-westerly wind has started blowing in the chill from the snow-laden Himalayan region from Wednesday dragging the mercury down. The MeT office, however, expects the intensity of this wind system to slow down in the last few days of this month.
"There will be no further drop in the temperature for 2-3 days in the last week of November. In fact we expect the mercury to start rising by the beginning of next month," said a senior official at the regional MeT office.
