CID to assist cops with Upadhyay's murder probe

Kolkata: The police are taking the help of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to arrest the accused of Manoj Upadhyay's murder. Upadhyay, chairman of Bhadreswar Municipality, was shot dead from point-blank range when he was returning home on Tuesday night. The police have already arrested one Munna Roy and remanded him to their custody after being produced before Chandernagore court on Thursday. An FIR has been lodged against a few people, including locals. The police have intensified their search for all the accused mentioned in the FIR and contacted the CID for their assistance in arresting them at the earliest.
Another FIR was lodged against an independent Councillor, Raju Sahu from Ward 7 of the municipality, suspected of planning Upadhyay's murder. His relation with Upadhyay had deteriorated and it could have been the reason behind the crime. Raju has fled and his house was found locked. Upadhyay's rivalry with a few labour contractors could also be a reason behind the crime. He had restricted them from supplying workers to jute mills in the area as they had been creating problems to hamper the smooth functioning of mills. It is learnt that Raju was also closely related to the contractors.
Meanwhile, hundreds of locals gathered on GT Road to urge the police to take steps to arrest the accused as early as possible. It had not become possible to ply vehicles on the road for nearly three hours as supporters of Upadhyay refused to move from the spot till senior police officers intervened.
