Chandannagar Mayor injured, driver killed in road mishap

Kolkata: Ram Chakraborty, Mayor of Chandannagar Municipal Corporation in Hooghly was injured while his driver succumbed to his injuries after they met with a road accident at Odisha's Jaleswar on Sunday morning when they were going to Puri.
It was learnt that four persons were also injured in the accident. All the injured persons including the Mayor had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Baleswar. Police said that Chakrabarty were travelling along with his family members and friends in two cars. The car the chairman was travelling in was hit by a truck near Rajghat bridge that connects Jaleswar with Solpatta. The local residents and police rushed them to the hospital.
Meanwhile, two persons were killed in another two separate road accidents in the state on Sunday morning.
One incident took place at Pradhan Nagar area of Siliguri on Sunday morning when two motorcycles collided head on, killing one and injuring two. According to the doctors the injured persons' conditions are critical. The local residents told the police that the youth were performing stunts when the accident took place.
Police said that that there were two riders on one bike and one on the other. After the preliminary investigation, police suspect that that both the bikes were at high speed when they collided with each other. The nature of the accident also suggests that the youth could have been performing stunts. The police are yet to confirm how the accident took place. The local residents of Sukna bridge area heard a loud thud on Sunday morning and rushed to the spot to see two bikes lying on the road in damaged conditions. Two riders were lying in a pool of blood while another had fallen in a road side bush. The locals rushed all of them to Siliguri district hospital where one youth was declared brought dead while the two have been undergoing treatment at the hospital with critical injuries.
Police have started a probe in this regard. They were trying to identify the youth after going through the registration numbers of the two bikes. The local residents alleged that some local youth of Pradhan Nagar area often perform stunts on the highway resulting in accidents quite often but the police administration is yet to take any preventive measures to check them.
The other accident took place at Baruipara area of Murshidabad early Sunday morning when a speeding trekker overturned killing one passenger and critically injuring 9 others. The incident triggered tension in the locality. Police and local residents rescued the injured passengers who were going to Berhampore from Harihar Para area of the same district. They rushed the injured persons to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital where one passenger died while 9 passengers have been undergoing treatment. Three of these passengers were stated to be in critical condition.
The injured passengers told the police that the trekker was competing with another when it overturned and fell on a road side ditch.
It may be mentioned that on November 2, the local residents of Beliaghata had set a Kolkata Municipal Corporation crane on fire after it crushed a class VI student
to death.
The incident occurred at around 10.30 on CIT road near the Beliaghata connector when the father and daughter duo who were on a bicycle suddenly came in front of the crane. The father was taking his daughter to school on his bicycle. The local residents alleged that the vehicle was running at a high speed at the time of the accident and the driver was inebriated. Police had arrested the accused.
Tuli Das was going to school along with her father Rabindra Nath Das on bicycle when they were hit by the speeding crane. The wheels of the crane crushed the girl while her father was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries.
