Case of medical negligence: Patients die; doctors, nurses heckled

Kolkata: Tension prevailed among patients at the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital on Monday morning after the doctors from the hospital began cease work.
The cease work, however, did not last for too long as the agitating doctors lifted the demonstration following intervention of the medical college and authorities who assured them that security issues will be resolved soon.
In a recent incident, two patients who were brought to the hospital with fever died. A patient whose identity is yet to be divulged by the medical college authorities was taken to the hospital on Sunday morning. The patient later died at the hospital following which family members started protests alleging medical negligence. A medical officer was also beaten up.
Later on Sunday evening, another patient also died. The victim's family members started agitation protesting against alleged medical negligence. The on-duty doctors and nurses were heckled. A lady medical officer in the emergency ward was also heckled by the family members of the victim. The doctors started an agitation from Monday morning protesting against the attack on doctors. They also refused to join their work. A meeting later took place during which the medical college authorities urged the doctors to lift their agitation as it would affect the health services in the hospital. The police officers from the Barrackpore police commissionarate were also present at the meeting.
The medical college authorities assured the doctors that the security measures would be enhanced at the hospital campus. It may be mentioned that in the past two days there were similar incidents of attack on the doctors at MR Bangur Hospital and ESIC Medical College at Joka.
