Case filed against constable for abusing SI of Kasba PS

Kolkata: For the first time in the history of Kolkata Police, a case has been registered against a constable for allegedly abusing a Sub-Inspector hailing from a backward class background.

According to sources, a Sub-Inspector (SI) of Kasba police station identified as Kunal Baraik alleged that a constable posted at the same PS, identified as Probal Banerjee, verbally abused him as he belongs to a backward class. The abuse took place on June 10 inside the police station.

Baraik alleged that Banerjee had intentionally insulted him in front of other staff of Kasba police station. Later on June 21, he lodged a complaint against Banerjee.

Sources informed that Banerjee had earlier been involved in an altercation with Baraik, while on duty. Since then, Banerjee used to taunt him regarding his background. The situation turned worse on June 10 evening, when Banerjee allegedly abused Baraik in front of the staff of Kasba police station.

Baraik even got depressed for a few days. Later, he decided to lodge a complaint against Banerjee and seek justice from his superiors. After he lodged the complaint, the information was conveyed to the senior officials of Kolkata Police.

Later, a case was initiated under sections of Scheduled Caste & Scheduled Tribes (Prevention & Atrocities) Act. Police sources informed that Debotosh Basak, ACP II, South Suburban Division (SSD), has been made the Investigating Officer (IO) of the case. He will probe the case and will report to the zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).
