Campaign to promote jute against use of plastic

Kolkata: A campaign to promote jute bag against use of plastic carry bags was held in the city on Sunday.

"MMIC Parks and Gardens Debasish Kumar, West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) secretary Rajesh Kumar and other officials were present during the public awareness campaign against use of plastic carry bag held in front of Lake Market at Parasar Road crossing. The bag had message 'Use eco friendly bag and stop carrying plastic bags' written on it," said Naba Dutta general secretary of Nagarik Mancha, the organiser of the campaign. He reiterated that the campaign started at 8 am and continued till 12 noon.

"We have undertaken an initiative in association with GREEN TECH Establishment to promote use of environment friendly jute bag in place of plastic carry bag," Dutta said.

It might be mentioned that Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has directed all the markets under its jurisdiction not to provide plastic carry bags to customers.

The civic body is responsible for maintenance of 47 markets in the city, among which 16 markets sell only garments.

The KMC had already warned vegetable vendors against use of plastic below 40 micron and confiscated a number of such plastic bags that were being used.

This apart, many shopping malls have replaced plastic bags by paper bags while many schools in the city are encouraging students to bring paper bags instead of plastic bags.
