Businessman found murdered in Zakaria Street jewellery shop

Kolkata: A businessman who used to run a gems and jewellery shop on 5, Zakaria Street was found dead inside the shop on Monday night.
According to the preliminary investigation police suspect that the victim was murdered by some unidentified miscreants who might have entered into the shop posing as customers.
The incident triggered tension in area. Police said that the body of Mohammad Selim was found inside the shop, the shutter of which was down.
According to the preliminary investigation police suspect that the Selim might have been murdered after he opposed the miscreants from looting valuables. According to the police there was strangulation marks around his neck.
In the course of investigation, the police came to know that he used to go home from his shop at around 8.30 pm everyday.
His driver used to come to the shop to take him home. He was a resident of Rajabazar area.
Like every other day he had called up his driver Ismail on Monday evening asking him to come down to the shop.
The driver told the police that he waited outside the shop for a few minutes and then called up the jewellery shop owner on his phone.
But the businessman did not pick up the call. As the driver reached the shop, he found that the shutter was down. As he rolled up the shutter he found Selim lying on the floor of the shop. He was also tape-gagged.
He immediately informed the matter to the local people.
After being informed, the police reached the spot and sent the body to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for the
post-mortem. As per the investigation police suspect that the businessman might have been strangulated to death when he opposed some miscreants who came to loot the valuables.
Police came to know in the investigation that some valuable diamonds were missing from the shop.
Police also suspect that the miscreants might have been acquainted with the businessman.
Police are investigating on why the other shop owners in the locality did not have any clues about the incident.
They suspect that the miscreants might have been entered the shop as customers and later strangulated the shop owner and fled with the valuables. Police interrogated the local businessmen and the driver of the deceased.
The homicide branches of the city police collected samples from the shop on Tuesday.
Police have started a detailed probe but are yet to arrest anyone in this connection so far. Raids are being conducted to nab the culprits.
