Kolkata: A businessman was abducted from Batanagar-Jhinjhirabazar Bridge on Wednesday by some miscreants who were in Army uniform. They claimed Rs 200 crore as ransom, which the businessman refused to pay.

Later, miscreants fired a few rounds and took him to his office at New Alipore, demanding the ransom amount again. When they were again refused, they shot the businessman and fled from the spot. Later, police arrested four miscreants in this connection.

According to police, on Wednesday at around 12 pm, a travel agency owner identified as Arindam Dhar, along with three of his employees, were on their way to office at Sahapur Colony in New Alipore.

Near the Batanagar-Jhinjhirabazar Bridge, an SUV and a hatchback car overtook them and blocked their way. Approximately 10 miscreants in Army uniform got down from the two cars and abducted Dhar and the others. Later, the accused persons demanded Rs 200 crore as ransom.

Meanwhile, Dhar requested them to go with him as he said he could give them the money only after reaching his office. Hearing this, some of the miscreants took Dhar with them in the hatchback car to his office, while others confined the other abducted persons in the SUV.

After reaching his New Alipore office, Dhar tried to defend himself from the miscreants and the security and other staff of the office tried to detain the accused persons.

Sensing danger, the miscreants fired a round which hit Dhar on his leg. When the employees got frightened, the miscreants tried to flee from the spot in the car. Meanwhile, hearing the gunshot, local residents ran to the office and managed to detain Sanjoy Roy alias Lebu Sanjoy.

New Alipore police station was also informed. Meanwhile, the other three victims were released by the accused persons near the CSTC garage in Taratala. They were soon rescued by police.

After that, sleuths interrogated Roy and later arrested three more accused persons. Sleuths have also scrutinised the footage of a CCTV camera in Sahapur Colony and identified the other miscreants. Probe is on to nab them.
