Bus, truck fall into waterbody beside Basanti Highway

Kolkata: A passenger bus and a truck fell into a roadside waterbody, when the drivers of both vehicles tried to evade a head-on collision between them on Friday evening. Several passengers of the bus as well as the person inside the truck have sustained injuries in the incident.

According to sources, on Friday evening at around 6 pm, a truck was moving towards Kolkata along Basanti Highway. At the same time, a pass-

enger bus of the Baburhat-Rajabazar route was moving towards Bhangar along the same road.

Near Chowbhaga Bazaar, a car tried to overtake the truck from behind. When the car driver sped up and crossed the truck, he found the bus dangerously close. To avoid a collision, the driver of the car steered left and managed to avoid a collision.

Meanwhile, seeing the car the truck driver tried to stop the vehicle, but failed to do it in time. At the last moment, the truck driver steered right to avoid hitting the car, but went to the wrong flank after being unable to stop.

At the same time, the bus came in front and to avoid a head-on collision, drivers of both vehicles steered in the opposite direction and lost control. As a result, both the bus and the truck slipped into the roadside waterbody.

Hearing the sounds of screaming and the vehicles, locals ran to the spot and started rescuing the passengers. Kolkata Leather Complex police station was informed about the accident.

Soon, the police along with Disaster Management Group (DMG) reached the spot. After almost two hours, all the passengers of the bus and occupants of the truck, except the helper, were rescued.

According to police, four persons have been admitted at Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC) and Hospital. The helper of the truck, however, got stuck inside the driver's cabin.

However, he was later rescued by DMG personnel and rushed to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, where he has been admitted with severe leg injuries.
