Bus rams into tree in Bhangar, 22 injured

Kolkata: Twenty two people were injured in a road accident, in which a private bus hit a roadside tree at Bhangar in South 24-Parganas on Wednesday afternoon.
Police said that 16 out of 22 passengers were heavily injured and they were admitted in serious condition to a local hospital.
A police officer said after speaking to the people who witnessed the accident, they came to know that the bus was moving at a high speed and the driver couldn't control the vehicle after taking a sharp turn, hitting the roadside tree.
The driver had fallen unconscious after the accident. Local people initiated the rescue work. Later, police joined the rescue work as well. Electric cutters were used to cut open a portion of the bus to rescue the passengers.
All 22 were pulled out of the bus and taken to a local hospital, where 16 were admitted and the rest provided with necessary treatment.
The bus was on route SD3 and was heading towards Ghatakpukur from Sonarpur. A police officer said that the stretch of the road is an accident-prone area. So there are sufficient number of road signs to make drivers drive cautiously to avoid any accident.
The police are now taking all necessary steps to avoid any road accident again in that stretch of the road.
They have placed security barricades on both sides of the road so that drivers are bound to slow down their vehicles at the turning and intersections.
