BSF seizes smuggled gold biscuits in Bengal

Kolkata: The BSF on Thursday seized seven gold biscuits, being smuggled in from Bangladesh, in West Bengal's Nadia district, a BSF official said.
Acting on a tip-off, Border Security Force troopers planned a special ambush near the unfenced India-Bangladesh border in Nadia's Gangolia village under the Krishnanagar sector and seized the biscuits. The smuggler, however, fled back to Bangladesh.
"The troopers challenged a woman coming from the Bangladesh side of the International Boundary (IB) but she fled, leaving behind a plastic bag," Naveen Chouhan, Deputy Commandant in BSF's south Bengal frontier, said in a press release.
The gold biscuits, weighing around 1.44 kg and worth Rs 41.81 lakh, were found in the bag and have been handed over to Bangladesh Customs Department for further investigation, he said.
The south Bengal frontier of BSF has seized gold worth Rs 9.85 crore and apprehended 11 gold smugglers so far in 2017.
