Bowbazar residents continue to return home after KMRCL assurance

Kolkata: Residents of Bowbazar area on Wednesday continued to return from hotels to their homes after getting assurance from the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL) that there would

be no further threats of house collapse due to the ongoing East-West Metro construction work.

"We shifted to our house at 8 am today (November 6, 2019). We have not yet received the "statutory notice"

from the KMRCL. We will receive it tomorrow (Thursday). We entered our house after the KMRCL assured us of proper electricity and water connections," said Santosh Gupta, resident of 1, Syakra Para Lane.

Those who have shifted earlier have received the statutory notice that mentioned that site engineers would inspect the premises immediately on return and identify any minor crack that could be visible due to the tunnel boring. In case of any crack, it will be repaired within seven days.

While several houses at Durga Pithuri Lane and Syakra Para Lane have partially or wholly collapsed, cracks developed in houses at Gour De Lane.

More than 600 residents living at Durga Pithuri Lane, Syakra Para Lane and Gour De Lane were evacuated and shifted to different hotels across the city.

"We came to our house in Syakra Para Lane on Monday. The KMRCL engineers had assured us that they will carry out the repair work if crack develops again," said Nirupam Pal, resident of 3, Syakra Para Lane.

While the KMRCL had shortlisted houses that are safe where residents can return, a few of them had not come back from hotels claiming fresh cracks in their buildings, no water supply and electricity.

The KMRCL had formed a team to examine 70 odd buildings. It had submitted a report on 54 houses after the buildings in the area had developed structural damages following subsidence on August 31. Out of these 54 houses, 27 needed to be demolished.

It may be mentioned that the KMRCL is executing the 16.6 km long East-West Metro corridor, which will connect Salt Lake Sector V with Howrah Maidan.
