Body of CPI(M) leader found floating in canal in South 24-Pgs

Kolkata: Mystery shrouds the death of a CPI(M) leader from South 24-Parganas whose body was found floating in a canal.

The incident occurred at Dakshin Laxminarayanpur village of the district on Wednesday morning.

Some local residents spotted the body floating in a canal and informed the matter to the local police station.

Police later recovered the body and sent it for the postmortem examination.

Police said that the victim, Akshay Kumar Mondal, an active CPI(M) leader from Patharpratima block of South 24-Parganas left his house on Tuesday evening.

He told his family members that he was going to catch fish in the nearby canal. As he did not return home in the night, his family members carried out a search in the nearby areas but did not get any trace of the victim. The family members also registered a missing dairy in the local police station.

According to the police there were injuries on his face and around his neck and as per preliminary investigation police suspect that the victim might have been murdered.

The motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained by the investigating officers. Some local CPI(M) activists staged protest demonstration in front of the local police station on Wednesday morning. The victim had been a member of the local panchayat.

In another incident, a clash broke out between the BJP and Trinamool Congress activists in Birbhum injuring many from both sides. According to the district police as many as 14 persons were injured out of which 7 are stated to be in serious condition. The clash broke out over putting up party flags at Dubrajpur.

It was also alleged that the BJP activists were trying to put up their party flags on the house of two Trinamool Congress workers in the area.

A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The injured victims were all taken to a nearby hospital.
