Kolkata: The BJP has taken over the control of South Dinajpur Zilla Parishad after 10 out of 18 members of Trinamool Congress joined the BJP in New Delhi on Monday.

Kailash Vijayvargiya handed over the party flag to the new entrants.

This is for the first time when the BJP has taken over the control of a Zilla Parishad in Bengal.

The party has also taken the control over Buniadpur municipality after the Trinamool Congress councilors joined the party.

Biplab Mitra, former Trinamool Congress MLA and former district president of the party's south Dinajpur unit also joined the BJP.

Vijayvargiya said many more MLAs and councilors will join BJP soon.

It may be mentioned that the BJP has already taken over Bhatpara, Halisahar municipalities under its control and the councilors of Bongaon municipality are likely to join the party soon.

Reacting sharply Firhad Hakim, state Urban development and Municipal Affairs minister said: "The opportunists who do not have any political ideology have

joined the BJP. The sooner these people leave the Trinamool Congress, the better will be the position of the

party. These opportunists will simply use the BJP for their personal gain," he said.
