BJP supporters clash with police in Bhatpara, Arjun Singh injured

Kolkata: BJP Lok Sabha MP Arjun Singh was injured after a huge clash took place in the Bhatpara-Kankinara area on Sunday. It has been alleged that in the morning, some Trinamool Congress workers were attacked when they were trying to regain their party offices, which had allegedly been taken over by BJP since the Lok Sabha elections. Following the clash, BJP workers led by Arjun put up a road blockade and allegedly pelted stones at the police.

According to sources, on Sunday morning Trinamool workers and supporters in Shyamnagar reportedly tried to recover the party offices which had been taken over by BJP after the Lok Sabha elections.

Jyotipriya Mallick, Trinamool district president of North 24-Parganas, alleged that BJP had taken over the Trinamool party offices since the Lok Sabha elections, which Trinamool supporters were trying to regain. While doing so, BJP workers attacked the Trinamool workers and beat them up.

Meanwhile, when Arjun came to know about the incident, he went to Shyamnagar. It has been alleged that Trinamool workers attacked his car and ransacked it. Later, BJP workers led by Arjun put up a blockade in the area.

Police reached the spot and tried to control the situation. However, despite repeated requests by the police, the BJP supporters refused to cooperate and started pelting stones at them.

Commissioner of Police (CP), Barrackpore, Manoj Kumar Verma, along with large contingent of police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) soon went to the spot and tried to control the situation. In order to control the furious BJP workers, police resorted to lathi charge. Verma was also attacked. While leading the police force, he fell down and was also hit by stones. Police had to fire several tear gas shells to disperse the violent BJP workers.

Amidst the clash, Arjun was reportedly hit by a stone and he received a head injury. However, he claimed that Verma himself had struck his head with a stick. It has been alleged that his son Pawan Singh, who is the MLA of Bhatpara, was also assaulted.

Mallick retorted against Arjun's allegation, saying: "He is lying. Arjun is trying to terrorise the area through his hooliganism. When he got injured, the CP was not there."

After the incident, Arjun was rushed to Bhatpara State General Hospital, where he was given first aid. Several stitches had to be done on his head. Later, he was shifted to a private hospital at Kadapara on Eastern Metropolitan (EM) Bypass, where he has been admitted.

To keep the situation under control, a huge police force has been deployed in the Kankinara-Shyamnagar-Bhatpara area. A police picket has also been set up in front of Arjun's home.
