'BJP supporters' arrested with carbine, ammo in Cooch Behar

Kolkata: Two persons were arrested in Cooch Behar on Saturday with a carbine rifle and a few rounds of ammunition from Chilkirhat area. The duo is believed to be BJP supporters.

According to sources, on Saturday Cooch Behar District Police came to know that a few youths were trying to create an unstable situation in and around Chilkirhat.

Acting on the information, a team comprising sleuths from Kotwali police station and Cooch Behar District Police held a raid at Bramhan Chowki area in Chilkirhat.

Seeing the police arrive, four youths gathered there tried to flee. Police chased

them and were able to detain two of them. Following detention, sleuths recovered a carbine rifle and ammunition from them.

Sources informed that the duo is closely associated with BJP and they have connection with local leaders of the saffron party. However, BJP

leaders have denied the allegation.

The duo has been identified as Prashanta Burman and Liton Seal. Sleuths are interrogating them to nab the other two persons who had managed to give a slip to the police.

"Two persons have been arrested. Two more are yet to be arrested. We are trying to

know from where they had managed to get such an advanced weapon. The duo has been remanded to police custody. A probe is on,"

said Nimbalkar Santosh Uttamrao, Superintendent of Police, Cooch Behar.
