BJP should understand that Bengal is not Tripura: Mamata

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee alleged that BJP is spending a huge amount of money to purchase the mandate of the people and warned the saffron party that the tactic won't work in Bengal.

"BJP should understand that Bengal is not Tripura. Here you cannot win votes by spending money," an irate Mamata retorted. While addressing a rally at Jadavpur, she said this culture is unknown in Indian politics. "One of my workers in Bankura informed that in a village dominated by Trinamool, BJP has given out Rs 5,000 per person to cast their votes in favour of their candidate. They are trying to purchase the mandate of the people," she added.

She further alleged that BJP leaders are staying in different hotels and guest houses across the state and are distributing money among the people. "The Election Commission has deliberately changed the Police Commissioners of Kolkata and Bidhannagar, so that BJP can transfer money through hawala channels and use the airport to bring money into the city," Banerjee said, adding: "I will not spare those persons in the administration who are helping BJP bring money into Bengal."

The Trinamool supremo alleged that even the vehicles of Central Forces are being used to transfer money. "We have lodged several complaints to the Election Commission of India, which is not taking any action. I do not know from where BJP is bringing such huge amounts of money," she added.

Coming down heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she said: "He is coming to the state to incite people. He knows very well that BJP will not be able to come back to power as they will not get any seat in South India. In Uttar Pradesh their seats will come down to anything between 13 and 17 and in Rajasthan too, they will get very few seats. This is why he is trying to make up the deficit in Bengal. He is telling lies and thinks that by inciting Hindus against Muslims BJP can gain mileage. We will not tolerate any such division."

Alleging that Modi is trying to spread canards against Bengal, Banerjee said: "He is telling every day that Durga Puja is not being allowed in Bengal. This is a big lie. When I gave Rs 10,000 to the clubs, BJP had moved the High Court challenging the decision. Income Tax department sent notices to the clubs, asking them to furnish the details of expenditure."

She said Modi is "worse than Hitler and all fascist leaders put together" and urged people to cast their votes in favour of Mimi Chakraborty in Jadavpur and Mala Roy in South Kolkata. "Cast your vote in favour of Trinamool Congress to ensure the victory of United India," she said.
