BJP IT man held for dirty posts on Nusrat

Social media attack on TMC leader

Kolkata: The North 24-Parganas district police on Saturday arrested two persons including the convenor of BJP's IT cell for making objectionable posts on social media against Trinamool Congress candidate Nusrat Jahan.

The two youth who have been nabbed in this connection are Tanmoy Bala and Subhendu Chakraborty. The latter is the convener of the IT cell of the BJP in North 24-Parganas.

According to police sources, Bala had made objectionable posts against Jahan on Facebook while Chakraborty circulated a similar one through WhatsApp that portrayed her in poor light. Bala was picked up from his residence in Gaighata's Chandpara area while Chakraborty was apprehended from his Baduria residence in the wee hours on Saturday.

Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee announced her party's candidate list on Tuesday fielding Tollywood actors Nusrat Jahan from Basirhat and Mimi Chakraborty from Jadavpur seat.

Since then, there have been several posts trolling both Mimi and Nusrat on social network.

According to police sources, Bala had made the post on his Facebook page on Friday night and also posted some of Nusrat's pictures with derogatory comments.

The post soon went viral and when a person, Uttam Dhali, noticed it, he lodged a complaint with Gaighata police station and brought the post to the notice of the sleuths. The complainant had also alleged in his complaint with the police that Bala is a BJP supporter and had made the post at the behest of senior BJP leaders.

Police have initiated a non-bailable against both of them under Sections 66B and 67A of the IT Act.

"Trolling is a new way of demeaning women. We want women to be given more respect. I don't know who these people are and why they indulge in such online abuses. I think they are simply uncultured. If they knew how to respect their mothers and sisters, they would've respected us as well," Nusrat said.
