Bizman carried away by tidal wave in Digha, missing

A businessman from New Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas drowned in the sea at Digha on Saturday night after he was swept away by a tidal wave.

Police are yet to recover the body of the victim. It was learnt that Sonu Das (35), was sitting on an elevated portion on the beach when he was hit by a wave at around 10.30 pm. He lost his balance and fell from the elevated portion and he was immediately swept away by the current.

The incident occurred on Saturday night when his family members were sitting by his side. After being informed, the police reached the spot and stared an investigation into the incident.

The local people and the victim's family members told the police that Das lost his balance after getting hit by a tidal wave. Police also came to know that the victim was pulled into the sea within a few seconds after his fall.

A search is being conducted by the district police administration but they failed to trace the victim till late Sunday evening. Police were investigating if it was an accident or if there was any foul play behind the incident.

The police are also probing to know if the victim was in an inebriated state at the time of the accident.
