Bidhannagar Police plans to crack down on drunk driving
Kolkata: Bidhannagar Police has decided to conduct a night drive daily to put a leash on errant and drunk drivers in New Town.
According to sources, at present checks for drunk driving are being conducted twice a week across all areas under the jurisdiction of Bidhannagar Police. Approximately a month ago, senior officials decided to conduct night-long raids often as during the past few months, several minor and major accidents have taken place in New Town.
Sources claimed that during the past one month, police have arrested four persons on an average during each day of the drive. The raid usually starts at 12 am and continues till 3 am. But after an accident took place recently near Srishti Crossing which claimed the lives of three youths, police officials have decided to conduct such drives daily and have also extended the time by one hour. It has been decided that from Thursday, the raid will continue till 4 am.
Sources informed that at present the raid is being conducted at New Town Bus Stand crossing on Biswa Bangla Sarani. But police officials are mulling to change the place of raid randomly.
The maximum number of accidents takes place in the area due to drunk driving, which has been a cause of concern for senior police officials.
"People need to be aware of the consequences of driving in drunken state. We are trying our best to curb drunk driving by enforcing law," said a senior police official.
