Kolkata: Commissioner of the Chandernagore Police Commissionerate has been changed on Friday. This comes within three days after of the murder of Bhadreswar Municipality chairman Manoj Upadhyay.
The 1993 batch IPS officer Ajoy Kumar is going to be the new commissioner of the commissionerate replacing Peeyush Pandey.
Pandey, who is also an officer of the 1993 batch, is becoming the new IG, Traffic, South Bengal.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress will hold a rally in Bhadreswar, Hooghly to protest against the murder of the chairman of its Municipality. Tapan Dasgupta, the party's district president, said the rally will be held on December 3 and senior Trinamool Congress leaders will be present there.
On November 25, there will be another rally in the area. Locals and party workers from the area will be marching from Chinsura in protest of the murder.
It may be mentioned that MP Abhishek Banerjee went to Bhadreswar on Wednesday and paid his homage to Upadhyay's remains. He said BJP and CPI(M)-backed goons were behind the murder. Senior Trinamool Congress leader and the state Urban Development and Municipal Affairs minister, Firhad Hakim, also criticised BJP, saying they believe in the politics of killing.
The police have arrested one person so far and intensified their search for the prime accused in this connection. Based on the allegations of the victim's well-wishers, the police are suspecting that Raju Sahu, an independent Councillor of the municipality, along with one Ratan had orchestrated the plan to kill Upadhyay. Apart from searching the accused, the police are also trying to catch the contract killers who were hired to kill the chairman.
A senior police officer said they confirmed after preliminary investigations that Upadhyay was shot dead by contract killers as the victim's wound looked like it was the job of a professional.
The police have ascertained that the contract killers had ferried across River Hooghly on a boat to reach Bhadreswar to commit the crime. Following the murder, they fled to North 24-Parganas.
