Bengal lockdown: Kolkata Police cracks the whip on violators

Kolkata: Kolkata Police has started taking action against the lockdown violators since Thursday morning, after Commissioner of Police (CP), Kolkata, Anuj Sharma instructed them to deal with such people strictly.

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her annoyance over a section of people in the city who came out of their houses for no valid reasons during the day.

"The next two weeks are very crucial. Please stay at home unless it is very urgent to move out. It was reported that at certain places people were found coming out of their houses to play cricket and in some places people gathered just to pass time gossiping among themselves," said Banerjee. She also urged people not to gather in large numbers at marketplaces, in both urban and rural areas.

Following this, Sharma instructed all the traffic guards and police stations across the city to act against the lockdown violators and start naka checking.

Later at around 2 pm, Sharma tweeted to inform that since Wednesday night, a huge number of vehicles have been seized and the accused drivers have been arrested under section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the IPC.

As per the figure given on Thursday evening, a total of 980 persons have been arrested for violating the lockdown. On Wednesday, a total of 48 persons were arrested.

Sharma also tweeted urging people to stay at their homes and cooperate with police and administration to fight COVID-19. He also wrote: "I have asked officers of Kolkata Police to be stringent and take strong legal action."

Meanwhile, two persons have been arrested from Keshtopur and New Town by the cops of Bidhannagar Cyber Crime police station for allegedly spreading rumour using a snapshot of news while it was on air in a leading Bengali news channel during March. The accused persons recorded while it was being shown on TV. Later, they edited the same and used derogatory words containing misleading information regarding spread of COVID-19 and circulated it through social media.

After the incident was noticed, a reporter of the said channel lodged a complaint at Bidhannagar Cyber Crime police station on March 18, alleging that unknown accused persons have deliberately tried to malign the organisation and him.

After the case was initiated, on Wednesday night, Rakesh Roy of Promodhgarh in New Town and Prosanta Mallick of Rabindrapally in Keshtopur were arrested. Police have also seized the smartphones of the duo which were used to circulate the fake information.

Three more persons have been arrested by personnel of Arsha police station in Purulia for allegedly posting and circulating fake information on Facebook. The trio had claimed that a youth in Arsha area has been affected with COVID-19, which is false. After the post was seen by the police, a case was initiated a few days ago and they were arrested on Wednesday night.
