Bengal govt to renovate 7 ghats along Hooghly river

Kolkata: The state government is set to repair and renovate seven ghats along river Hooghly at Dakshineswar and Belur Math at a cost of Rs 34 crore. The decision has been taken in the cabinet meeting held in Nabanna on Tuesday.

State Education minister Partha Chatterjee said: "The Centre had assured of doing many things to check erosion in river Ganga. But nothing has been done yet in this connection. Ultimately, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took the initiative and it has been decided to repair the ghats at Belur Math and Dakshineswar."
Three ghats at Dakshineswar – Chandni Ghat, Panchabati Ghat and Ferry Ghat - will be repaired. Three ghats in Belur Math and Mayer Ghat in the opposite bank will also be repaired.
There will be an investment of Rs 17 crore for the projects at Dakshineswar and another Rs 17 crore will be invested for the projects at Belur Math and Mayer Ghat. There will be iron fencing on the bank of river Hooghly in Belur Math.
