Bengal Chamber signs MoU to boost start-ups in state

Kolkata: The Bengal Chamber has signed a Memorandum-of-Understanding (MoU) with Infinity Group to boost the start-ups in the state.

The Bengal Chamber has received 184 new applications for new start-ups across the state, out of which 24 have been chosen. The new start-ups would come up with assistance from the state government.

Arnab Basu, chairperson, IT Committee, the Bengal Chamber on Thursday said that their role would be bridging the gap between the entrepreneurs and the government agencies to facilitate the new start-ups, which would create more employments in the state. He also said that new start-ups would hail from various fields including sustainable environment, healthcare and manufacturing.

Basu was speaking to the reporters at the sidelines of the 10th edition of Business IT Conclave at a private hospital in the city on Thursday. The conclave has arranged a special Japan hour to collaborate with Japan, with special focus on start-ups called "Indo Japan Start-up Hub".

It may be mentioned here that a latest report shows Bengal has seen enormous growth of tech start-ups. The city can now compete with the cities like Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune in terms of conducive climate for start-ups to grow and flourish. It has been estimated that 53% of start-ups in the state are in incubation stage.

According to a recent report, there is no better time to initiate the start-ups and entrepreneurships, with the government focusing on the sector. The total number of tech start-ups in India is around 7,200-7,700 (2018) and the total number of the same in Bengal is between 216 to 286 approximately, with an average growth rate of 3%.

The data also shows that Bengal has quietly jumped to its place among the desired states for start-ups and opened its gates to technology entrepreneurs, investors and fresh start-ups. "Japanese companies are seeing ample opportunities in the start-up sector in India and wish to venture and explore other Indian cities and markets. They are now coming to Bengal to initiate talks. The Chamber has made special connect with JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization) in facilitating B2B connects, especially in the realm of Technology," Basu said. Indrajit Sen, president of the Bengal Chamber, said: "The Bengal Chamber's Incubation centres, set up in association with the Bengal government through its nodal agency WEBEL and Bandhan Bank, will encourage entrepreneurship and facilitate deserving potential entrepreneurs get a platform to initiate start-ups, which would further contribute to the tech start-up movement in the state."
