Bank refuses to pay maturity amount of FD to tribal woman

Kolkata: A tribal woman from Birbhum has sought the intervention of Union Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, after a bank in Sriniketan refused to credit the maturity amount of her fixed deposit to her savings account.

However, the passbook of the victim Munglee Maddi shows that there had been no discrepancy on her part as she had adequate funds in her account to cover the fixed deposit amount.

When contacted, a hapless Maddi said she would like to meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the state minister for Backward Classes Welfare Development Benoy Krishna Burman, to seek their intervention in this connection.

"I am the sole breadwinner of my family having an ailing father and a brother suffering from Down syndrome," added Maddi, who has a savings account with the Sriniketan Branch of IDBI Bank.

She had opened a fixed deposit (Serial no. COD 0209056) which matured on September 30, with Maddi supposed to get Rs 1,44,671 as maturity amount. The money is supposed to have been deposited in her savings account already.

Maddi said that as she cannot speak Bengali or Hindi fluently, she had sent her representative to the branch manager after the money was not deposited in her account.

She alleged that the branch manager not only refused to talk to the representative, but also refused to tell him why the money had not been deposited in her account.

She alleged that the branch manager told her representative: "Let Munglee Maddi do whatever she can. This money is not payable to her as she didn't have the money in her account at the time the fixed deposit in question was issued."

Maddi has questioned how the bank could issue the receipt for the fixed deposit if there was insufficient money in the account.

"I am a poor girl. I do not know what to do now. I was refused just because I am a tribal woman who cannot speak Bengali or Hindi fluently," she added.
